Hello 2020! I hope everyone had an amazing Holiday season full of love and lots of fun. By now we have all probably recovered from our Holiday food comas and have shrieked as we saw the numbers on our bathroom scales. (Trust me, even if you're covering one eye, the numbers don't change!) So, now is the time to begin those New Year's Resolutions folks! Out of curiosity I asked several people what they are committing to in 2020. There were a couple of people going for a raise or promotion. Others were getting ready to start a business, grow their hair out, clean out their garage, finally take that trip to Europe, and spend more time with their family. A few were resolute to not having a resolution at all. However, the resounding winner of the 2020 New Year resolutions was to lose weight. Considering the obesity epidemic in America, as well as my own struggle with keeping my weight down, this really did not come as a surprise to me. We, as a nation, are so blessed with all of the types and quantities of food at our literal disposal, we can't help ourselves. Where we run into trouble is when we attempt to drop some of the extra pounds we are wearing. There is so much confusion with how to go about losing weight, and the diet industry banks on our myriad of foiled attempts, to the tune of 72 billion dollars in 2019. We're forking out all of those hopeful benjamins and statistically going absolutely nowhere. I started reading Dr. Michael Greger's new book, that came out at the beginning of December, titled "How Not To Diet." All I have to say is WOW! Seriously, everybody who is thinking about going on any of the popular diets, being advertised ad nauseam right now, needs to read this book! You'll save yourself time, money, and a lot of self criticism when that diet you're contemplating leaves you frustrated, defeated and hangry! In light of my reading, I have made my New Year's resolution to improve my fitness, get more exercise (Check out my new bike!), and eat more fruits, veggies, grains, greens, beans, pulses, nuts, and seeds, and dump added sugars, oils, and fats. I know me! I like to eat! I'm not going to fool myself into thinking that portion control is the magic bullet. I'm just going to eat the heck out of the truly healthy stuff and get out there and play. We shall see how it goes. To be continued...
